How Long Does a Wax Last?

For those of us who have ever experienced the wonderful feeling of skin post-wax, you know how amazing it feels to have soft, smooth, hair free skin. We also know how it feels to constantly consider how long these wonderful results will last – especially when you have a big event to attend.

The truth is: how long your wax results last is strongly dependent on a few key variables, but generally last about 4 weeks. Let’s talk about how these variables may affect your wax results!

The general rule of thumb for how long a wax lasts

If you’re new to the wax game, expect your results to last (on average) for about three to four weeks. That means you have about two weeks of virtually hair-free skin, with the third and fourth week leaving you with signs of hair growth. As a wax routine becomes a staple in your hair removal process, the growth stages tend to slow down and leave you with hair free skin for longer.

Are waxing results affected by the body area being waxed?

When diving deeper beneath the surface knowledge of waxing, you may be surprised to learn that the area being waxed plays a role in how long the hair takes to regrow. However, this is just one of multiple factors that affect the rate of hair regrowth. Things like the thickness of the hair being waxed, genetic makeup, as well as your body’s hormone levels will impact how long it takes for regrowth to surface.

Underarms

The hair that makes up your underarms can be a real toss-up sometimes. For those who experience fast regrowth, underarm hair can reappear in as little as 2 weeks. On the other end of the spectrum, your results may last as long as 4 weeks.

Arms and legs

How Long Does a Wax Last?

Most of the time, the growth cycle of your arms and legs are completely different than any other part of your body. In fact, your arms could be completely different from your legs – all thanks to hormones and growth cycles! On average, waxing results on your arms and legs lasts between 3 to 6 weeks.

Brazilian and bikini waxing

The thickness and coarseness of genital hair lends itself to having long-lasting results from waxing. You can expect your first bikini or Brazilian wax to last about 3 to 4 weeks! An ideal client with slow hair regrowth and routine waxing appointments may see results last for up to 6 weeks.

Other factors that affect how long a wax lasts

  1. Genetics: The rate and pattern of hair growth are largely determined by your genetic makeup. If your family tends to have slower hair growth, you may experience longer-lasting results from waxing.

  2. Hormones: Hormonal changes, such as those related to puberty, pregnancy, menopause, or certain medical conditions, can affect hair growth. Hormonal fluctuations may impact the thickness and speed of hair regrowth.

  3. Hair Growth Cycle: Hair goes through different growth phases, including anagen (growth), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting/shedding). Waxing is most effective during the anagen phase because it removes hair from the root. However, not all hair is in the anagen phase simultaneously, so some hair may be missed during the waxing process.

  4. Age: As people age, hair growth tends to slow down. This results in longer intervals between waxing sessions and potentially reduced overall hair density.

How to get the best results from a waxing session

Let’s be real: everyone who waxes is hoping to prolong the amount of time your skin remains lusciously hair-free. Here are the most important things you can do to care for your skin, and keep hair away as long as possible!

Pre and post waxing care

If you’re not already, try to indulge in a little pre-wax and post-wax care. Implementing this process can perfect the environment your hair is regrowing from, preventing dry skin and ingrown hairs while ensuring that your skin looks phenomenal after every waxing session.

Book consistent appointments

Booking consistent appointments is the best thing you can do for your skin and delay the hair regrowth process. As regular appointments are carried out, you will notice slower hair growth cycles, as well as thinner, sparser hair overall.

Never shave in between waxes

While it may be tempting, it’s critical that you avoid shaving between your waxing appointments. It “resets” your hair growth cycle, puts you at greater risk for ingrown hairs and razor burn, and you’ll have to wait longer before you can wax again.
